Sustainable Harvesting and Utilisation of Invasive Bamboo
Transforming Challenges into Opportunities in the North-East Tobago UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
A Story of Sustainability

Invasive bamboo has long posed challenges to the ecosystems of the North-East Tobago UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. But even invasive species like bamboo can create opportunities for positive change. By harvesting and repurposing bamboo, we’re creating eco-friendly artisan products while restoring native biodiversity.

This project is not just about environmental restoration—it’s about turning this invasive species into a sustainable resource, reducing disaster risks, and fostering green economic development within the local community.

Empowering Our Community

A key highlight of the project was our bamboo craftsmanship workshop, where women and youth from the community learned how to transform harvested bamboo into unique and marketable products. This hands-on experience equipped participants with valuable skills and planted the seeds of entrepreneurial spirit.

Together we learned how to cut, prepare, carve, drill and paint bamboo to make cups, pencil holders, plant hangers, bird feeders, and decorations to place around the house.

Supported By
With the support of the New Zealand High Commission Fund Caribbean, this project is building a future where sustainable livelihoods and environmental conservation go hand in hand.
